Earlier people used to say that it was a gimmick. A trick to fool customers. Now that services like NameCheap has WordPress specific packages like easyWP, I think a few thing can be optimised to make WordPress installation and maintenance easier.
Providers sell "optimised for WordPress" but in reality, most are over subscribed. The environment is also classed as "managed" but in reality, it's nothing you can't handle yourself.
I think they will be providing some extra help to make it little faster and better. But have full control of the setup and installing plugins will make you a better learner
You take out a few things that is not required. Add a few scripts that will make some settings one-click. Hopefully that will give you a WordPress hosting.
But if you are going to pay more, make sure that performance is better than that in a normal hosting package. Otherwise, not worth it.
