I saw a few forums, they are very old, has a large no. of posts and are like an authority in their niche. But I was amazed to see that they are running vBulletin 3. I have nothing against vB3, but it was like from 2008. There are many options for them to switch. vBulletin has had at least 2 major versions ever since.

What is the secret behind staying with vBulletin 3 ?

Simple. They do not want to change the URL structure and ruin their SEO.

But many forums have moved on. There are methods in Search console to notify of redirects.

Google gives all sorts of promises. But once broken, it is hard to fix. They don't want to loose the advantage their have right now by gambling into Google's policies. It is money first.

Is it that hard to migrate ?

I thought it was a simple case of 301 redirects.

301 redirects are SEO friendly, so no excuse really - dependant on volume, this could be done using a htaccess wildcard.

Think from their point of view. They have a very successful forum which is working fine. They don't want to break it.

More or less like not willing to move on from Windows 7.
