I have a couple of questions

[*]1. Should websites receive donations from users
[*]2. Can a website be self sustain through donations

Have you tried the _Donate_ button ? Which payment source did you use ?

@Abhi I have this on my forum. It's never been used of course, but it's "there" :) I prefer PayPal myself as it's the most flexible payment mechanism - except perhaps for India...

Why did you choose a donation system ? Leaving aside other monetisation options. Do you have faith in that model of revenue generation ?

1) Websites can receive donation if the site offers interesting content. Running a site is not free, money is required so many will surely donate.

I never tried donate button, used ads to earn but that too didn't work for me.

I will not take donations. That is my personal stand. I am ok with sponsors. ie, if someone is willing to sponsor hosting and related services.

I don't think donation is a bad thing. A lot of webmasters do that effectively. Linux Mint raise around 10,000 + USD every month through donations alone. It is the life line of open source to some extent.

@admin So you are not interested in taking donations as well as displaying ads? The only good way you like to run the site is sponsor?

I might run ads when it comes to that. But I like to be as non profit as I can be. If someone sponsors hosting and other charges. ie, one or more person / company, I am happy to go that way.

Plus, there are boards which charge premium membership for market place and resources access. Something like that won't be bad either.

You can still be non profit and accept donations

Yes, this is simply a personal choice. Sponsoring sounds much neat to me. Mainly because it is a win win deal and a business one.
