How long did it take for your forum or website to start ranking in Google? I’m guessing it has to do more with the content?

I would say 1 year. Any expectations before that is too much.

Yeah, that's very correct unless you are making use of blackhat tricks, then you can easily rank faster but you will eventually pay the price because Google will deal with your website or forum and it may never rank higher again.
