Github is taking over Node Package Manager aka _npm_ . Or in short, is joining the Microsoft club which owns Github. Yes, it sounds better when you hear Github acquires npm than MS acquires npm.

> I’m excited to announce that GitHub has signed an agreement to acquire npm.

> npm is a critical part of the JavaScript world. The work of the npm team over the last 10 years, and the contributions of hundreds of thousands of open source developers and maintainers, have made npm home to over 1.3 million packages with 75 billion downloads a month.

According to the [npm blog](http://blog.npmjs.org/post/612764866888007680/next-phase-montage)

>
Code:
npm, Inc., is being purchased by GitHub.
<i>> </i>
<i>> </i>The public registry remains public, free, and as available as ever.
<i>> </i>
<i>> </i>npm as you know it continues, and in fact, there is good reason to believe that it’ll only get better.
<i>> </i>
<i>> </i>I’m still going to be working on npm (but with the luxury of more resources and less stress).
<i>> </i>
<i>> </i>I’m really excited about the stuff we’re going to do.

According to [Github](https://github.blog/2020-03-16-npm-is-joining-github/)

> For paying customers who use npm Pro, Teams, and Enterprise to host private registries, we will continue to support you.

Microsoft also mentions that they are investing heavily in Github packages.

npm says

> We're thrilled to join an organization as committed to open source as we are, so that the npm registry can remain free & public forever.

Github says

> We’re excited to announce that @npmjs will be joining GitHub. Millions of JavaScript developers rely on npm, and we’re honored to support this community in a new way.

I thought you had faith in MS @phenomlab

_npm_ was useful for me a few times. They are very popular as well. I think even _Font Awesome_ use _npm_ for their pro pack.

That's never been the case. I wouldn't trust Micro$oft with a padlock for my garden shed.

Every tech blog is covering the news. Most of them are posting neutral emotions. Possibly because they do not want to run into trouble. It is no doubt a big news and the impact has to be seen with time.

When Microsoft acquired Github people were moving to Gitlab. Looks like there is no such alternative for _npm_ at the moment.

The acquisition process is now complete according to a [Github blog post](https://github.blog/2020-04-15-npm-has-joined-github/) and it says

> The public npm registry will always be available and free for the millions of developers who use it.

So the deal is done. Let us see how **npm** tries to bag more people. _Github_ just did a populist trick out of their hat.
