Do you tend to use free or paid software for your projects?

I use free solutions whenever possible because I am a hobbyist.

This. If you are not going to make money, there is no point in buying paid software and related add-ons.

I prefer this one too. But sadly there are not many reliable free options that can compete with the paid services.

Free when I'm just starting out, but if it starts to gain traction, then I look for paid options.

I use Proboards which is free. It's good for those of us just starting out who have very limited knowledge of how to run a forum. I'm still learning about domains, hosting, even coding. Forums like these are extremely beneficial to help us learn :)

As this is more of a hobby rather than a side hustle, I prefer to use free software. Like ZandraJoi I too use Proboards. I like their support and their advertising are not overwhelming. You can pay to hide ads but I don't mind them too much. The downside is that if I ever wanted to move to a different host, I don't think there is any way I can move my content/posts over. Looks like I may be stuck with Proboards for life. 😅

I know it is your decision and I respect it. But there are free software and very affordable hosting packages. Plus an independent domain name is always a status symbol.

That is my issue with Proboards as well. My goal when I first started was to have my own forum but PB doesn't allow it to move over. Maybe V6 will allow that.

Trouble is, we'd have to start over from scratch.

I really don't like the idea of starting from scratch. If I did decide to pioneer a new forum community on a hosted software I would probably choose an entirely different niche.

What niche would you think of doing? What else do you like?

@ZandraJoi

That's an excellent question. I'm not sure actually. So much time and energy goes into creating a forum (with intent of getting it to grow and be self sustaining in the long run) I am hesitant to even think about the possibility of starting a new one.

If I HAD to choose though I imagine it would be something I'm really into perhaps a forum dedicated to coffee or personal finance.

A very nice question. I do not check whether the product is free or not. Does it have what I need? Does it fit the budget? How good is the SEO? etc

There are a few other things that decides which software to use. For some people, paid software is not viable. So it is also good to have free alternatives.
