Ubuntu has recently announced that they will build apps using Flutter for Ubuntu. This is a major decision for Linux users and the open source community. **Flutter** is currently a Google project and they are very vocal about Flutter and Dart recently.

**How to install Flutter on Ubuntu Linux**

https://flutter.dev/docs/get-started/install/linux

You can get started from the link above.

You will have to use Android Studio with Dart and Flutter plugins

Just like Snaps, **Ubuntu** will find a hard time pleasing age old Ubuntu fans. Canonical / Ubuntu staff was seen using _can't please all_ defence.

Flutter is a popular UI toolkit with a decent background and Google backing. So **Flutter** is not going to back down considering the fact that it is free and open source as well.

I have a **Ubuntu 20.04** machine with **Android Studio**. I would like to check the Flutter and Dart plugins. Last day I saw that Dart 2.0 is available.

Try it please. And share your experience. From what I read the UI of Ubuntu will be based on Flutter very soon. So Ubuntu might actually look like an Android App 🧩

But that will be for the next LTS at the most. Which is **Ubuntu 22.04**. In the meantime, they have a lot on the plate including Private Folders, Wayland by default and so on.

The new _Ubuntu installer_ is built using _Flutter_

>the Ubuntu team showed an early demo of their new installer app that was rewritten with Flutter

Canonical, the people behind Ubuntu have some serious plans about Flutter integration

>Canonical is partnering with us to bring Flutter to desktop, with engineers contributing code to support development and deployment on Linux.

This one is a very clear statement that will affect future versions of Ubuntu and its fans and users

>Flutter is the default choice for future desktop and mobile apps created by Canonical.

Flutter is a Google product. That inside a Linux, a very very popular distro is going to face a lot of ire. Which is only natural. Canonical faced a lot of criticism in terms of snap and they handled it well so far. This is not something a big company cannot do. They are capable of dealing with bad press.

Linux Mint and numerous other distros are already forking Ubuntu with a more (pure?) FOSS aspect. So it is not like people does not have a choice.
