Discourse can be called the leading open source free software to build a community. It is a forum software which defied all the natural conventions about a forum community and still managed to survive till date with a very positive reputation.

Discourse has a very active development cycle. The come up with minor and major versions very often. This time it is their major version with support for hardware security keys

I have seen something like this when our office used an accounting software named Tally.

It is not just the hardware security keys, v2.4 of Discourse comes with better polls, on click upgrade from the dashboard, assign awards in bluk, better integration and handling of emojis, improved API key security, Tag enhancements, revamped user menu, strict CSP on by default, improvements in inserting hyperlinks etc.

I love Discourse. Only that it requires a VPS. Flarum is as close as you can get to Discourse.

I personally do not like Discourse as it uses Postgres as it's database backend which is getting away from the traditional mysql stack. It's also containerised which I'm not a huge fan of. I understand the principle, but not keen.

That is what a few people said to me. Back end is hard. Perhaps it really is.

I want to find out someday. Only thing stopping me is the discussion layout.

That's the general consensus. It's not easy for any beginner.

Is Discourse a bit resource hungry at the user end ? Considering I have a few Discourse sites which I visit often, those tabs on the browser are very heavy. When I close it, the browser starts responding again.

Recent change might have made it more demanding on resources. Discourse page is feature rich and it would definitely ask for more.

Discourse now allows converting topics into static standalone pages with custom styling through its **Page Publishing** feature. This can be useful when you are setting up _Privacy Policy_ or _Terms of Service_. Published pages will have the visibility rules of the associated topic.

I don't know how they come up with ideas like this. Really helpful features. Some of them are charming.

Ever thought of Automatic reply deletion feature ?

>
To help keep wiki topics clean and navigable, and to encourage people to edit the important information into the first post where it belongs, we’ve added a new topic timer type to automatically delete replies after a certain number of days.

Recently a lot of companies are using Discourse as internal website. ie, something only available through their local network. User cards and related social modifications could be related to that.

That is an interesting application for Discourse. It is true, not every community software is as good as Discourse in member engagement. They do well even against paid alternatives. Considering that they are hosting it locally there is less headache with dealing the backend aka Ruby on Rails.

Discourse hosted solution is repeatedly having outages. This is from their social media page where they share the status. I wonder how such a skilled team are getting used to some many outages.
