How hard is to set up and maintain a data centre for hosting services ? Do you have experience with one ?

Is it a very costly affair ?

It is expensive, hard, with a lot of legal issues. If you are going to start a data centre, make sure that

[*]1. Local govt bodies are friendly to you
[*]2. There is a reliable electricity provider with possible options for backup power
[*]3. A very very reliable internet service provider who allows your actions legally. And also has some tricks under their sleeve to prevent problems like DDoS
[*]4. If possible, a backup internet connection
[*]5. Availability of hardware and associated peripherals
[*]6. Availability of skilled admins and hardware technicians who do not mind living in close proximity

Depends on where you are hosting the data centre. But more or less very important as they can create all types of unwanted headaches for you.

That applies to any business. But what you said is correct, when the investment is this high, it is wise to avoid unwanted trouble.

That is why it is always best to leave this to a country where they encourage and support data center rather than fight with them.

It is the same everywhere @Jason . They will expect you to take special care of them everywhere.

Some countries are a tone better. But in the end, both of you are correct.

One thing missing here (unless I missed it) is the ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) side of things. Setting up a data centre is one thing, but ensuring you comply with ESG in the sense of recyclable and renewable energy etc, then it's a hard sell to clients if you can't prove that your servers make use of green energy and hence are environmentally friendly.

I haven't heard of this before in the context of data centres.

I mean, of all the hosting websites I visit, there was no indication of such a preference.
