ICANN, the international body that manages domain related procedures and laws allows an increase in `.com` prices. It was set as $ 7.85 in 2012 which will now be $13.50 for the next 10 years. Based on this change, Verisign which has the rights to oversee .com domains might increase the price by 7 % every year.

> ICANN CEO Göran Marby writes that the organization “is not a price regulator and defers to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of Justice for the regulation of pricing for .COM registry services.”

It is said that this move is based on Trump administration's attempt to wipe of anything related to Obama govt. which is responsible for the price control.

Domain registrar Namecheap is said to be putting up a last minute effort against this. You can read about it here

Take a tip. If you already have a .com domain registered somewhere, consider moving it to Cloudflare. Their domain renewal rates are much cheaper than others.

I read about this and many have written to ICANN about it and hoping that something will be done about it.

@Abhi yes, but currently only for renewals and transfers - not for new domains

What do you think ? It will get through ? If it is really the current US administration who wants to undo Obama practices, then there is little chance that community response will work. Politicians always win.

@admin my understanding is that Cloudflare have applied for registrant status, but not sure what the status is.

They are already providing SSL certificates. Are they good enough ?

The first time I hear about them, they were a CDN / cache service.

Cloudflare is a trusted name. Their firewall is good in free and paid modules. Some say that free version has some outages that are not supposed to occur. Other than that, a valid business.

@admin yes, but in order for it to work properly you need to push all traffic through it. For example, you couldn't just use it for DNS and expect the security side to work because it won't. In addition, Cloudflare can actually slow down sites rather then the reverse which is desired as it can significantly increase the TTFB (Time To First Byte - the amount of time it takes for the page to display any meaningful content). Cloudflare of course refute this and advise you to ignore TTFB but that's not wise advice when you start to add almost a second to the loading time of your site.

Your content can be fantastic, but if the site takes more than 3 seconds to load, or looks like it's doing nothing, people will simply click the back button.
